当館所蔵の原書『A Apple Pie』(Kate Greenaway, Derrydale Books, 1993)には、「i」が入っている。
東京都立図書館から、『A Apple Pie』(Kate Greenaway, Frederick Warne & Co,Ltd.)
・『Mother Goose The Old Nursery Rhymes』(アーサー・ラッカム絵、ほるぷ出版、1992年)
・『The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes』(Iona&Peter Opie, Oxford University Press、
1951) ・・・・・但し、これは、「A Apple Pie」では なく、 「A was an Archer」の詩。 「j」と「v」抜け。p.49
・『The Nursery Companion』(Iona & Peter Opie, Oxford University Press,1980)・・・「A was an
Archer」の詩。 「i」「u」抜け。pp.10~15 、 「Nursery Novelties」の詩。「j」「v」抜け。pp.16~19
Kate Greenaway used an early version of the rhyme to illustrate A APPLE PIE which was first
published in 1886 and it will be noticed that there is no rhyme for the letter I.
The rhyme of A APPLE PIE is very ancient and reference is made to it as early as 1671 in one
of the writings of John Eachard. In these early versions the letters I and J were not differentiated.
The letter J as we know it to-day was the curved initial form of the letter I and was always used
before a vowel. --『A Apple Pie』 見返し
・また、同じく前掲の『The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes』及び『The Nursery Companion』にも以下
In the earlier recordings the letters I and J,U and V, in common with other alphabets, are not
differentiated. --『The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes』p.48
・・・there are only twenty-four letters since, for alphabetical purposes, the letters I and J, and U
and V were still not differentiated. --『The Nurserey Companion』p.123
